Pearmain Class Newsletter Spring 2024

Pearmain Class Newsletter Spring 2024

Dear Families,

Pearmain Class have worked so hard this term. Highlights have included being business entrepreneurs by designing and building their own games and stall ready for the Frost Fayre, becoming actors and cameramen/women by using their knowledge of filming technique to create and edit their own films and becoming chefs, developing their own healthy recipes, full of their favourite ingredients.

After Christmas, welcome to the planet’s coldest lands. Vast wild and hostile territories; incredibly beautiful, yet often deadly. Take shelter from the elements or fall prey to icy winds and the deepest chill. Trek bravely and valiantly across treacherous terrain to the ends of the Earth, treading deep in snow or being pulled by a team of mighty sled dogs. Be alert, for magnificent mammals roam these lands, sometimes hungry or fresh for a fight. Perhaps a hungry polar bear or an Arctic fox is hunting rodents, as swift as the wind. Research facts and figures of climate, temperature, habitats and ecosystems, and compose evocative poems about the Northern Lights. Become part of an Antarctic rescue team, braving the elements to rescue terrified passengers from a ship struck by a deadly iceberg that hides deep beneath the Southern Ocean. Wrap up well and settle by the fire. I’m just going outside and maybe some time.

In science, your child will be studying Electrical Circuits and Components. In the Electrical Circuits and Components project, your child will consolidate their understanding of the components that make up a circuit, such as a lamp, cell, wire and switch. They will make a range of circuits and use symbols to draw circuit diagrams. Your child will learn about electric currents and measure the voltage of different cells. They will discover how cells produce electricity and research questions about cells and batteries. Your child will also learn how the voltage across a circuit affects the performance of different components. They will explore how programmable devices are used in everyday life and create a program to switch a light on and off via a light sensor. They will use the knowledge gained throughout the project to design, make and evaluate a programmable home device.

Their learning will also be consolidated by having an awesome experience with Balestra Primary Science Workshop and their new workshop! The children will be putting their knowledge of circuits to the test to tackle circuit board investigations, learn and create morse code messages and electric telegraphs and learn all about the history of electricity in fun and practical sessions, which is sure to make them electrified in our lessons!

Maths Skills   It is important that the children continue to practise their times tables.   Children are expected to know all times tables facts and related divisions by the end of year 4 so continued practice is absolutely crucial to all new mathematical content.   We use TT Rockstars to practise tables recall. Please ask if you need logins to be sent home again.

Spellings   Spellings next half term will be set on Thursdays and the spelling tests for those spellings will be carried out the following Wednesday.   Lists will also be put onto our class story on Class Dojo and can be sent home as paper copies if that helps.   The vocabulary development is as important as the spelling part so please look at and discuss the words we are learning.
PE   Tuesday and Thursday are our PE days next term.    Please ensure your child has the correct kit in school for both indoor and outdoor PE.   Pearmain Class are swimming again in the first part of this term so please ensure that swimming costumes are sent in on Fridays.

Home Learning Expectations   Please read with your child at least 3 times a week and record it in their reading log. Children who achieve this will receive a raffle ticket per week, which is entered into a draw at the end of the half-term.

Class assemblies   Our Class Assembly for the half term spring will focus on Healthy Living.
